Sunshine Yellow Cape Cod Bedroom

The Beach House Series

Yellow Cape Cod Bedroom

This yellow Cape Cod bedroom is the final room I’ve decorated in the Cape Cod Beach House Series.  This room is like a perfect beach day with sunshine yellow walls and accents of seashells.

What’s wrong with this window?

The homeowner added this beach theme lace ready-made valance onto the existing curtain rod.  An existing 1″ metal blind was used for privacy. Sort of cute don’t you think?

There were two problems with the window.

  1. The valance mounts onto the molding making the window look very short and squatty.  You can see through the lace and the blind headrail is sort of ugly.
  2. The metal blinds block out a lot of the view (Check out those classic Cape Cod blue hydrangeas).  If you’ve ever had metal blinds you know they rattle in the wind when the windows are open, now that’s annoying.  The tangled mess of lift cords on the right side are a hazard to young guests and pets.

Custom Valance and New Blinds

The top photo shows the valance with the existing one-inch metal mini blinds with cords. Notice how narrow the view-thru is with the 1″ blinds.  On the bottom is the new two-inch Hunter Douglas EverWood® Alternative Wood Blinds with child-safe LiteRise® lifting system. the view-thru is much larger.

Here’s the new custom valance. It’s a variation of a balloon and relaxed Roman shade. It is made of white matelasse with contrasting yellow in the pleats. Notice how the valance extends up to the ceiling. The window looks so much larger and look at that view!

Opened and Closed

The yellow Cape Cod bedroom with blinds opened during the day and closed at night.  When closed, the blinds allow complete privacy.  They block out some light but not 100% so you can awake to the morning sun. You wouldn’t want to miss any opportunity to spend the day on a Cape Cod beach!

The blinds raise up without pull cords.  A light lift of your hand in the center of the bottom rail guides the blind to exactly where you want it. Completely child safe.

The details of the yellow bedroom

A detail of the valance. The white is a matelasse fabric that has a pebbly puckered texture.  Contrasting yellow accents the wall color on the inside of the pleats and on the top cording.
